11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
This verse is very important to remember for people who wonder when dinosaurs lived as well as for those who believe in the gap theory. Everything was created in 6 literal days. Not periods of time.
The gap theory teaches that there is an unspecified amount of time that takes place between Genesis verse 1 & 2. But as you can see from Exodus 20:11 above, this is not true. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is.
It is important to stress that God knew the end before He created anything! He then predestinated you to be conformed to the image of his Son, according to His foreknowledge. Just as God is eternal, without beginning of days nor ending of life, so was His eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ. Are finite brains cannot comprehend the infinite. God had an eternal purpose in Christ before the world began.
Obedience is and always has been what God has desired of mankind.
Whether Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, or Noah and the Ark, or Moses and the keeping of the Law. Obedience is and always has been what God has desired of mankind.
When Adam and Eve sinned in the garden of Eden the penalty of death came upon all mankind. This penalty is known as the Law of Sin and Death. The soul that sins shall surely die. This law is an everlasting law. It is shown in both the Old and New Testaments.
Ezekiel 18:4, 20
4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
Romans 6:16, 23
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
This is a certainty!! If you sin, you will die!!
The Lord spoke this to Adam!!
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
When Adam and Eve ate of this tree the judgment of condemnation passed upon all mankind.
16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation,
Immediately upon the sin of Adam and Eve the Lord pronounced judgment upon them, but we also hear for the first time the prophecy of a coming Messiah that will save mankind from their sins.
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
The serpent’s seed are the children of disobedience. There father is the devil. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.
This enmity between the serpent’s seed (satan) and the woman’s seed (Mary) would be Jesus Christ. The rest of the Bible would be about this seed that was to come and the salvation that would come with Him.
16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.
Understand that Jesus took back the power that Satan had over mankind. This being death. For the soul that sins it shall surely die. Through the death of Jesus this power was taken away from Satan.
18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
Through the Lord’s death, burial, and resurrection; He brought forth a way for us to die out to sin and to be spiritually born again. Thus Jesus Christ, the son of God, would restore sonship that was lost by the first Adam when he sinned.
1 Corinthians 15:45-47
45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
A spiritual rebirth for a spiritual death. From death unto life.
8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
The judgment that passed upon all mankind was condemnation for their sin. When you have become born again, your Adamic sins that were inherited from birth, which came through the bloodline of the male, were cut away by the circumcision of Christ in the baptism.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Just think, God had an eternal purpose in Christ before the world began. And each one of us were part of the eternal purpose in which God purposed in Christ unto Himself.
10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
God calls out a people unto Himself.
The first eleven chapters of Genesis cover about two thousand years – half the duration of the whole Old Testament time frame. By comparison the preceding events from the time of Creation were less detailed in Scripture. Through the lineage of Shem, the Spirit singled out one man and devoted fourteen chapters to him.
Abram lived in Ur of the Chaldees around 2000 B.C. Though highly civilized and industrially prominent, the city was pagan and idolatrous. Four hundred years after the Flood, God called Abram to travel, by faith, to an undisclosed, distant land.
Abram’s call was a personal summons for separation. In a grossly idolatrous world, Abram must teach his family, who in turn would teach their families about the one true God.
Separation from familiar surroundings meant leaving his own parents. Often we must also separate ourselves from the plans and wishes of our loved ones and friends. Like Abram, we must walk by faith, guided by God.
A. Covenant Promises
The Hebrew word for “covenant” comes from a verb signifying “to cut or divide.” In most scriptures, the Hebrew word implies: “to cut the covenant.”
For ages, primitive people have practiced this rite. In his book The Blood Covenant, Dr. H. Clay Trumbull has accumulated data from all parts of the world that reveal men entering into a binding agreement similar to the Genesis record.
Before officially entering into covenant, Abram and Sarai received new names – Abraham and Sarah.
1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.
16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
B. God’s Covenant Sign – Circumcision
Then God gave to Abraham the method of cutting the covenant.
10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.
12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.
13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
Circumcision was a visible mark and sign in a man’s flesh that he had been separated unto God. Without circumcision, it was impossible to share the benefits of Abraham’s promises. This mark constantly reminded the Israelite of God’s promises to him and of his responsibilities to God. Even the lowliest Hebrew – including bond servants and strangers – were included.
C. Gentiles become Abraham’s Heirs
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb:
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
Putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, and putting on Christ!!
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed (this being Jesus) should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Who are Christ’s? Those who have been born of water and of the Spirit. Those who have repented and been baptized in Jesus name for the remission of sins, and those who have received the promise of the Holy Ghost evidenced by the speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance.
28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
We are speaking of how we enter into the New Testament Covenant!! This process begins with understanding that just as Abraham received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised, that we to also enter into the New Testament Covenant with a circumcision.
Just as God cut the covenant with Abraham with the sign of circumcision, even so God also cuts the covenant with us in a different way. Instead of it being a circumcision of the flesh, it is a circumcision of the heart.
16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
It is important to understand that when the Lord writes His laws into your hearts and into your minds, it comes by the receiving of the Holy Ghost.
17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
To enter into this covenant one must repent of their sins and be baptized in Jesus name for the remission of their sins. God will have cut the covenant with us because the circumcision of Christ, the circumcision made without hands, takes place when you are buried with Him in baptism. Wherein you have faith in the operation of God who raised up Jesus from the dead.
18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
This is because Christ died once for the ungodly. Once your sins have been remitted, if you fall short and sin again we are told, “And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
We enter into the Holiest of Holies by the blood of Jesus, which he shed for us at calvary.
So when we repent of our sins and get baptized in Jesus name for the remission of our sins, we enter into the New Testament Covenant, just as Abraham entered into the covenant that God gave to him and to his seed after him.
Abraham received the sign of circumcision and was given a promise. We too are circumcised and we too receive a promise. The promise we receive is that we will receive the Holy Ghost. When we receive the Holy Ghost, the Lord, writes His laws in your hearts and in your minds.
Thus you enter into the New Testament Covenant when you repent and are baptized in Jesus name for the remission of your sins. However, you must then receive the promise to complete the fulfilment of the Covenant in which God writes His laws in your hearts and minds.
1 Corinthians 12:13
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
You enter into the body of Christ when you receive the Spirit of Christ. Not beforehand. When you are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins you enter into the New Testament Covenant, but are awaiting the promise of the believers, which is the Holy Ghost and how we gain access into the body of Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17-19
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
Understand that it is a promise that you will receive the Spirit of Christ when you have repented of your sins and have been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins. However, until you receive the Spirit of Christ you are not in the body of Christ. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (Rom 8:9b)
Remember we must be born of water and of the Spirit to see or enter into the kingdom of God. (John 3:1-7) It is intended that when you repent and get baptized in Jesus name for the remission of your sins, that you then receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. However, we know that many times one repents and gets baptized in Jesus name, but may not receive the Holy Ghost for some time. However, it is a promise of God that they will. God can not lie. It will take place.
If a person repents and gets baptized in Jesus name for the remission of their sins and never receives the Holy Ghost, this is because they were not obedient to God and never kept their repentance. If they truly repented to begin with.
See an example of both a delay in the receiving of the Holy Ghost after believers repented and were baptized in Jesus name for the remission of their sins as well as one who did not receive the gift of the Holy Ghost because he had truly not repented.
13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
Here we see the delay. These believers repented of their sins, and were baptized in Jesus name for the remission of their sins, yet the Holy Ghost had fallen upon none of them. It wasn’t until Peter and John came down and prayed for them that they received the Holy Ghost.
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
Simon also was a believer. He also was baptized in Jesus name. But what went wrong?
20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.
23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.
Simon had not truly turned away from his sins. Therefore, the Circumcision of Christ that takes place in the water baptism did not get performed on him because he had not truly repented of his sins. He had not turned away from his sins, but thought to make gain off of selling the Holy Ghost to other people.
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
The circumcision of Christ taken place, that the body of sin might be destroyed. This is the cutting away of your inherited sins from birth, the circumcision made without hands.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Fourth Dispensation – “Promise”
A. Fourth Dispensation – “Promise”
The fourth dispensation is so named because of the covenant promises first made to Abraham, then extended to Isaac, and Jacob.
Men now were required to love and believe in God and to obey the Abrahamic covenant stipulations. The first requirement was go be a holy people, separate, and apart from all others.
B. Ishmael, Father of Arab Nations
9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.
11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son.
12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.
21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
C. Isaac, Son of Promise
1 And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.
2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.
4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.
5 And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
D. Abraham’s Test
1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
E. Isaac, Esau, and Jacob
19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham begat Isaac:
20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
21 And Isaac entreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was entreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to inquire of the LORD.
23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;
11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
Remember God knew the end before the beginning. He knew that Esau would sell his birthright. So according to the eternal purpose in Christ, that it would be of Him that calls that election might stand and not of him that works, it was said, “The elder shall serve the younger. As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.”
Esau fully expected to still receive the birthright that he sold to his brother. He was not aware that God had heard his words, seen his heart, and was despised of God for it. So even though he was the firstborn, Jacob received the birthright that day.
F. Birthright Exchange
29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
Esau despised his birthright, but Jacob coveted after it.
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
Jacob may have deceived his father when he inherited the blessing, but the Lord looked upon the hearts and brought to pass what Jacob coveted after and yet what his brother despised. That being… THE BLESSING OF GOD, that Jacob would be heir with Abraham and Isaac. And Jacob received THE PROMISE.
G. Jacob’s Dream
10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.
11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.
17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
H. A New Man! A New Name!
24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
We today are the children of Israel. The promise passed from Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. We today are the spiritual seed of Abraham and the children of Israel (Jacob).
15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.
16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.
