Bishops, Pastors, Teachers, and Deacons

1 Timothy 2:11-14
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

If the woman is to learn in silence with all subjection how then can she be the Pastor of the Church seeing the Apostle Paul went on to say “But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression”?

What is to be misunderstood in this passage of scripture above? It was very clearly stated. In case there still be any confusion let’s hear it again.

1 Corinthians 14:34-37
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

If the woman is to “learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church”, then how can she be the Pastor of the Church?

You can not try to answer this by saying “there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus”, (Galatians 3:28) because you are not only undoing what was written by the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 2:11-14 and 1 Corinthians 14:34-37, but you are also doing away with the headship that was also taught by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:3 “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.”

You can not nullify these scriptures concerning the instruction given by the Apostle Paul concerning women by using the Apostle Paul’s words against himself saying “there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus”.

God is not going to break his Word and call a woman to Pastor his church when we “are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets” (Ephesians 2:20) and the Apostle Paul is laying the foundation saying “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.” The Apostle also stating, “Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.”

There isn’t anything to debate within these scriptures in regards to a woman being called to Pastor a church as it is clearly written and can not be done away with.

Just four verses after the Apostle Paul makes the statement “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence, (1 Timothy 2:11-12) he immediately begins to speak of the office of a bishop stating “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. (1 Timothy 3:1) But he then qualifies who can be a bishop at verse two which reads, “A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach”. Notice very carefully that a bishop must be “the husband of one wife”. This again establishes that a woman can not be called to be a Pastor of the Church. Furthermore the Apostle Paul explains that a Bishop must also be “One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)” (1 Timothy 3:4-5)

Many churches use the word bishop as an overseer of many churches, but notice here the Apostle Paul speaks of the church of God singularly. If the Apostle Paul had intended this reference to be referring to many churches he would have used the word churches just as he did continuously throughout his epistles. So the use of the word Bishop here is being used interchangeably with being a Pastor of the Church.

So again we see a woman can not be the Pastor or Bishop of the Church. The Apostle Paul goes on to teach who can be a deacon within the Church stating “Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;” (1 Timothy 3:8) “Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.” (1 Timothy 3:11-12) Here we also learn that a deacon can not be a woman.

Many people have tried desperately to find a way to allow women to be Pastors, teachers, and deacons within the church but as anyone can plainly see from the wording of the Apostle Paul this is not the case. God does not call women to be Pastors and Teachers. The Apostle Paul spoke this very plainly in the preceding chapter stating “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.” (1 Timothy 2:11-14) He follows this up by explicitly excluding women from the roles of Bishop and Deacon by saying that a Bishop or Deacon must be “the husband of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2, 12) Within these verses of scripture we also see that the husband is “to rule his own house” (1 Timothy 3:5) “ruling their children and their own houses well.” (1 Timothy 3:12)

Many people have contended that Phebe (Romans 16:1-2) was a deacon. However as the Word of God has clearly stated through his servant the Apostle Paul a deacon must “be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.” (1 Timothy 3:12)

The scriptures are very clear that a woman can not be the Pastor or Bishop of a Church. Neither can they be in the office of a deacon. The Apostle Paul explained why this is “For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.” (1 Timothy 2:13-14) This is all about the divine order of God. Since Eve was in the transgression God’s punishment to her was: “Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.” (Genesis 3:16) So the divine order of God is directly tied in with the created order and the punishment given by God to the woman. “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.” (1 Corinthians 11:3) ” For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.” (1 Corinthians 11:8-9)

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.” (1 Peter 3:1-7)

Come let us Grow Together: Do you Love your Spouse?

Come let us Grow Together is a weekly series that deals with the many topical categories that exist within the Word of God.  The purpose of this series is to grow in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in things pertaining to God.

Regardless of societal or cultural changes, we must remain steadfast, unshakeable, and unmovable in the Word of God.  Are we being obedient to the roles in which God has ordained for us to walk in according to whether we be a husband or a wife?

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. (Eph 5:22)

Wives, you are to submit yourselves unto your own husbands in like manner as you submit yourselves unto the Lord!!  Are you fulfilling your role to your husband?

For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. (Eph 5:23-24)

Even as the Church is subject unto Christ in every thing, even so wives are to be in subjection to their own husbands in every thing!!

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. (Eph 5:25-27)

Husbands, you are to love your wives and be willing to die for her even as Christ also loved the Church!!  Are you fulfilling your role to your wife?

So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. (Eph 5:28)

Husbands you are to love your wife as your own body!!

For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: (Eph 5:29)

Even as the Lord nourishes and cherishes the Church, even so must you husband’s love your wife!!  Are you fulfilling your role to your wife?

For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband. (Eph 5:30-33)

Husbands, do you love your wives even as yourself??  Wives, do you reverence your husbands??

What if my husband is not in Church?

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. (1 Peter 3:1-2)

Are you fulfilling your role to your husband?

Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; (1 Peter 3:3)

What adorning should it be then?

But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. (1 Peter 3:4-6)

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. (Col 3:18-19)

Are you fulfilling your roles as God ordained for the husband and the wife?

Let’s fulfill our roles according to what thus saith the Word of God.

Come Let us Grow Together: Developing a Relationship with Jesus Christ

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. (Eph 5:22)

The foundation of the development of a relationship with Jesus Christ is to Love the Lord with all the heart, mind, soul, and strength.

For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. (Eph 5:23)

For you are the Body of Christ and the Body of Christ is the Bride of Christ.  Therefore let us be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live!

Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. (Eph 5:24)

For obedience is what the Lord desires from each one of us.  Let us walk even as He walked.  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (1 Jn 5:3)

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; (Eph 5:25)

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. (Rom 5:6) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. (Rom 12:1)

That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. (Eph 5:26-28)

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. (1 Jn 3:18)

For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: (Eph 5:29)

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. (Eph 4:15-16)

For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. (Eph 5:30)

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. (1 Cor 6:19-20)

For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. (Eph 5:31)

But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. (1 Cor 6:17)

This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. (Eph 5:32)

For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. (1 Cor 12:13-14)

Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband. (Eph 5:33)

But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. (1 Cor 11:3)

If we then subject ourselves to the hierarchal headship of God as we were taught and fulfill our roles that have been given unto us as a man and woman, and also as a husband and wife; we will then further develop our relationship with Jesus Christ, because of our obedience unto the Word of God of which He has set forth for us to follow according to whether or not you are a man or a woman and whether or not you are the husband or the wife.

Let us go on unto perfection and Let us fulfill our roles!!
