Come let us Grow Together: What does it mean to Speak in Tongues

The full title of this message is, Come let us Grow Together: What does it mean to Speak in Tongues and How do you Know if that Person is Really and Truly Speaking in Tongues and not Just Trying to Deceive You?  I thought the title was to long for the title bar.

Come let us Grow Together is a weekly series that deals with the many topical categories that exist within the Word of God. The purpose of this series is to grow in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in things pertaining to God.

Have ye received the Holy Ghost

What is meant by speaking in tongues is that God will speak through you in another language that you do not know. This takes place as the Spirit gives the utterance. When you speak with other tongues you can quench it. Meaning to stop yourself from speaking. We are told in the scriptures not to do this. “Quench not the Spirit.” (1 Thess 5:19) The Apostle Paul said, “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:” (1 Cor 14:18) And he also said “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.” (1 Cor 13:1) So we learn here that there are many languages that God can use when someone either receives the Holy Spirit for the first time, or whether that person is giving thanks to God in tongues, or whether that person is in intercessory prayer speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance, or whether the gift of the Spirit known as divers kinds of tongues is being used; that this language could be a language that was spoken on our Earth or that of Angels. However if the gift of divers kinds of tongues is being used this is only to be done with the gift of interpretation of tongues. Whether that be the same person who spoke with the gift of divers kinds of tongues or another that interprets it. But remember that you can not use the gift of divers kinds of tongues if you have never first received the gift of the Holy Spirit of which will always come with the evidence of speaking with other tongues as we see throughout the scriptures. (Isa 28:11-12) (Acts 2:1-4) (Acts 8:14-19) (Acts 10:44-48) (Acts 19:1-6) (1 Cor 14:21)

So, how do you know if that person is really speaking in tongues and not just trying to deceive you? There are several answers here. We are told in scripture “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.” (1 Jn 4:1-3)

So we need to try the spirit to see if it be of God. What manner of fruit is the person bearing that is speaking with other tongues? Are they producing good fruit? “For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” (Lk 6:43-45)

If this is a person that is bringing forth a tongue that is being interpreted, if their word does not come to pass either the interpreter was wrong or both the person speaking in divers kinds of tongues and the interpreter is wrong. So does the interpretation align to the Word of God? Because God and His Word are inseparable. The Word of God is always taken over someone who is giving a prophecy or the interpretation of an unknown tongue.

There is also a gift of the Spirit known as the gift of discernment. Again you must first have the Holy Spirit before you can operate in one of the gifts of the Spirit. But this gift of discernment can reveal to you whether this is of God or not. There is also the gift of knowledge that can reveal to a person whether this is of God or not. However, it is imperative to make sure that you understand that when someone receives the Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit that they will always speak with other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance and this is not meant for an interpretation. This is the person receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost: everlasting life. The nine gifts of the Holy Ghost are gifts that are used to edify the body of Christ after that a person has first received the Holy Ghost. The gifts of the Spirit are to edify the body of Christ. However, this does not mean that God will not correct or chastise his people and use a spoken word to do so or a tongue and interpretation of the tongue to do so. Also the Pastor of the Church is God’s chosen man to shepherd his flock. So if the Pastor be of God and thus filled with the Spirit of God the shepherd will be looking out for his flock. We are to “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” (Heb 13:17) The Pastor of the Church will also be trying the spirit to see if it is of God and if he does not believe it to be true will inform the person and the Church. However, if the Pastor makes a mistake in doing this then that is between him and God. The person with the message has fulfilled what God gave to them and if they are cut off then they are to obey the Pastor even if it is to the detriment of the Church.

It is of the utmost importance that you follow after the plan of Salvation and go to a Church that is teaching the true plan of Salvation that is given to us and was laid out for us throughout the book of Acts as this was where we learned of the actions of the Apostles and were taught the plan of Salvation for all of mankind. The Epistles to the Churches that are after the book of Acts are written to already established Churches who have already been obedient to the plan of Salvation and are written to show the Christian how we are to live a holy life and also to explain to us what has taken place after we have been saved. The plan of salvation is not found in the epistles to the Churches but in the book of Acts, and the epistles elaborate to the Church what Jesus Christ has done for us and how that once you have become born again what has taken place and what we are to do. The plan of Salvation was given in Acts chapter 2 where the Holy Ghost was first poured out upon the believers and the message of what we are to do to become born again is given to us in this same chapter.

“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.” (Acts 2:36-41)

C&C: The Power of the Righteous Prayer

Connections and Comparisons is an ongoing weekly series that deals with many scriptures in the Bible, some of which are not commonly addressed. The purpose of this series is to examine the scriptures at hand comparing what is said and looking at the connections within.

The Power of the Righteous Prayer avails much, but never the less it must be according to the will of God. Even though all things are possible with God it does not mean every prayer you pray even with all faith will be answered according to your will, but it will be answered according to God’s will. Just in case you don’t believe this remember our Lord Jesus Christ prayed “Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.” (Mk 14:36) The will of God was for him to drink the cup! Will you lose your faith in God because you suffer long? Will you also go away?

1 Kings 17:1-16
1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
2 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.
5 So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.
7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.
8 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.
10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.
12 And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.
14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

Prayers are answered according to the will of God. God may tell you what to pray like he did with the Prophet Elijah concerning the rain, but the Prophet Elijah had the faith to pray the prayer of faith.

15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.
16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

1 Kings 18:1, 41-46
1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.
41 And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.
42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,
43 And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

The Prophet Elijah knew what God had told him and had the faith to send his servant seven times while he prayed.

44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.
45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

The Power of the Righteous Prayer avails much!

Luke 4:25-26
25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

James 5:16-18
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

The Power of the Righteous Prayer avails much! Remember, however every thing according to God’s will, God’s purpose, and according to God’s timing. Not yours! I thought you wanted the will of God in your life? You pray for God’s will and sing songs that you are a willing vessel to be used of God, but when the answers come and you begin to be used of God whose will do you now want? I thought my prayers would bring forth this or that, but that wasn’t what God’s will was for you. So do you really want the will of God in your life?

2 Kings 20:1-11
1 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.
2 Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying,
3 I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.

The Power of the Righteous Prayer avails much!

4 And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying,
5 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.
6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.
7 And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.
8 And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day?
9 And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?
10 And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees.
11 And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.

All things are possible with God if only we believe and ask according to his will.

Luke 17:5-6
5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

Mark 16:15-18
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Mark 11:22-26
22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Have faith in God! Ask according to his will! Forgive, if ye have ought against any! If your prayer isn’t answered it doesn’t mean that you lack faith. You may lack faith, but that is not always the case. You can have all faith and ask and not receive. “For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Cor 12:8-9)

1 Corinthians 12:4-11
4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Now there are diversities of gifts, differences of administrations, diversities of operations, but the same Spirit, the same Lord, and the same God which worketh all in all to profit withal. Have faith in God!

1 Corinthians 12:27-31
27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Many people are confused that when it says “do all speak with tongues”, means that it is ok for them to not ever speak with tongues. This is comparable to saying do all have the gift of faith, means that it is ok for them not to have faith. This is speaking of spiritual gifts. The gift of divers kinds of tongues and the gift of interpreting tongues. This is not the same as you receiving the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance. If you have not ever spoke with other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance you do not have the Holy Ghost and can not have any of the gifts of the Spirit of which one of the gifts is that of faith. The gift of faith is not the same thing as having faith even as divers kinds of tongues is not the same as receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance.

Luke 18:1-8
1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:
3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.
4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.
6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.
7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?
8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

I thought you wanted the will of God in your life? You pray for God’s will and sing songs that you are a willing vessel to be used of God, but when the answers come and you begin to be used of God whose will do you now want? I thought you were following the leading of the Lord. I thought you would follow him where ever he leads you? So do you really want the will of God in your life? Will you lose your faith in God because you suffer long? Will you also go away?

James 4:1-3
1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

1 John 5:14-15
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Mark 14:32-42
32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.
33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;
34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.
35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
37 And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
39 And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.
40 And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.
41 And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42 Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

The Gift of Divers Kinds of Tongues versus the Receiving of the Holy Ghost

Isaiah 28:11-13
11  For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
12  To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
13  But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

The initial sign of receiving the free gift of the Holy Ghost was the speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gave the utterance, just as the Prophet Isaiah prophesied would be the case.

Acts 2:1-4
1  And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3  And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4  And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Remember:  If you have not received the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance, you have not received the free gift of the Holy Ghost.

The Confusion:

1) Many people are under the belief that the Holy Ghost is automatically given to you at some point.  Many believe the receiving of the Holy Ghost takes place after repenting and accepting Christ into their lives.  However, this is in direct contradiction to scripture.

2) Some people believe that the speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance is only one of the nine gifts of the Holy Ghost and not everyone has this gift.  So not all people that have the Holy Ghost will speak with other tongues.  The error in this belief is not recognizing that you must first receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost before you can receive one of the nine gifts of the Holy Ghost.

To state this very plainly:  The 9 gifts of the Holy Ghost are not the same as the initial receiving of the Holy Ghost.  The 9 gifts of the Holy Ghost are gifts of the gift.  You must first have the gift before you can receive any of the other gifts of the gift.  Another words, the gift of divers kinds of tongues is not the same as the receiving of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance.  Divers kinds of tongues is one of the nine gifts of the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The Holy Ghost is not automatically given to you because you have repented of your sins and have been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins.  The scriptures state this very plainly.

The Samaritans receive the Holy Ghost…..

Acts 8:12-18
12  But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13  Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
14  Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15  Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16  (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

Here we see very clearly that these people had repented of their sins and were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of their sins, and that none of them had received the free gift of the Holy Ghost.

The Holy Ghost is not automatically given to you because you believe on the name of Jesus Christ.  Nor is it given to you just because you repent of your sins.  Nor is it given to you just because you have been baptized into Christ.

17  Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18  And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

Remember:  The scriptures do not have to redundantly state over and over again, that when you receive the Holy Ghost that you will speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance.  We already saw that the Prophet Isaiah prophesied that the receiving of the free gift of the Holy Ghost would come with stammering lips and another tongue and we already saw that when the Holy Ghost was poured out upon the people on the day of Pentecost they all began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

So even though it does not state here that the people spoke with other tongues, we already know from the Prophet Isaiah that this will take place when you receive the Holy Ghost and we know that when the first people received the Holy Ghost they spoke with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

You can then conclude that what Simon the sorcerer saw was that after the Apostle prayed for the people to receive the Holy Ghost, he saw them all begin to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave the utterance.

The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14 is identifying the gifts of the Spirit and giving instructions on how to properly use these 9 gifts of the Spirit.  You can’t have any of these gifts if you don’t have the Spirit.  And in order for you to receive this Spirit you must seek the Lord for this Spirit and when your receive this Spirit, you will speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance.  This is why the Apostle Paul stated in: 1 Corinthians 14:39  Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

First thing of importance is that the Apostle Paul wrote a letter to one of the Churches explaining spiritual gifts.  Letters or Epistle written to already established Churches understood the plan of Salvation as Repenting of your sins and being baptized in Jesus name for the remission of your sins.  They also understood the promise of the Holy Ghost to the believer evidenced with the speaking of other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance.

This Epistle written to the Corinthian Church was instructions concerning the nine gifts of the Spirit from chapters 12 – 14.

So what is the gift of divers kinds of tongues and the gift of the interpretation of tongues?

The gift of divers kinds of tongues is used for the edifying of the Body of Christ, when this gift is in operation and the gift of interpretation is in use with it.  These 2 gifts have nothing to do with a person receiving the Holy Ghost as evidenced with the speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance!

The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14 is identifying the gifts of the Spirit and giving instructions on how to properly use these 9 gifts of the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:1
1  Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

The topic spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:4
4  Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

You have to have the Spirit to have one of the 9 gifts of the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:28-31
28  And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
29  Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
30  Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
31  But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way.

Topic is still the nine gifts of the Holy Ghost or the spiritual gifts of the Holy Ghost.  We are told in verse 28 how the Lord has set some of these in the Church.  The Body of Christ is many members so not everyone will have the same giftings or callings.  However, this is speaking of the nine gifts of the Holy Ghost not the receiving of the Holy Ghost.

The more excellent way from verse 31 is not saying to make void the others, but rather to be sure you have charity in your life.  Charity is love and love is the fulfilling of the Law.

1 Corinthians 13:1
1  Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

Teaching the importance of having charity which is love.

At the beginning of Chapter 14 the Apostle Paul then tells the Church to pursue both charity and to desire spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians 14:1
14:1  Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

Also again the topic is still spiritual gifts. “Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts”.

1 Corinthians 14:2-5
2  For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3  But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4  He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5  I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

This was not speaking of people receiving the Holy Ghost or worshiping God while speaking in tongues, but was speaking of one of the nine gifts of the Holy Ghost of which one is the gift of divers kinds of tongues as was stated from the topic from verse 1 which was spiritual gifts.

The only time the gift of interpretation of tongues is needed is when the gift of divers kinds of tongues is in use.  Recall from verse one that the topic is spiritual gifts, not the receiving of the Holy Ghost.

So how do you know the difference?  When someone begins to use the gift of divers kinds of tongues, the whole Body of Christ present, knows it.  Immediately the Spirit of God will quicken inside of you, and you will know to be quiet to listen to what God has for the Church.  Now if an interpreter is not present or if the person speaking in divers kinds of tongues is unable to interpret the message, then they are to remain silent.  For how is the Body of Christ edified if the message intended for the Church is left without an interpretation?

But this has nothing to do with the receiving of the Holy Ghost!!!  For the receiving of the Holy Ghost and the speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance is how one receives the gift of the Holy Ghost.  Thus why the Apostle Paul said, forbid not to speak with tongues!

You do not need an interpreter when someone is receiving the Holy Ghost.

1 Corinthians 14:12
12  Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

Verse 12 again identifies the topic as spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians 14:19
18  I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
19  Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

Teaching us that we want those who come to our church to be able to learn.  However we must not quench the Spirit.  And this again is speaking of the same topic which was spiritual gifts of which the gifts of divers kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues, and the gift of prophesy are the gifts being spoken of.  These gifts edify the body of Christ when used correctly.

1 Thessalonians 5:19
19  Quench not the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:21-25
21  In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
22  Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
23  If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

Meaning that they would not hear as was spoken in verse 21.  So the sign of speaking with other tongues was not for the believer but for the unbeliever who thinks you are mad.  Yet they would not hear!

24  But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
25  And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

This being a sign for the believer because the unbeliever has testified that the prophecy was true.

Also Apostle Paul is explaining what was written in the Law concerning the Holy Ghost.  That they would not hear.  The sign of the receiving of the Holy Ghost was concerning the non believer thinking you were mad.  However the people on the day of Pentecost believed the Word of God and the preaching of Jesus Christ.  They believed that this was that which was prophesied by the Prophet Joel.  Others who saw this sign thought they were drunk and mocked.  This would be those who think you are mad.

However, Paul then again stresses the importance of prophecy in comparison to receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.  Remember the topic was concerning spiritual gifts and the edifying of the Body, which comes by the gift of prophecy or the gift of divers kinds of tongues with the gift of interpretation of tongues.  These edify the body when in use.  The subject is still spiritual gifts.

The people on the Day of Pentecost did not need an interpreter because the Lord allowed the people there at that time to be speaking in languages that the people understood.  This also was not the gift of divers kinds of tongues in use to edify the body of Christ as a message to the Church.  This was the birth of the New Testament Church and the receiving of the Holy Ghost.  Never the less, many of these people still thought the people were drunk and mocked them.  Thus still thinking the people were mad.

So in comparison to the Day of Pentecost and the receiving of the Holy Ghost, the divers kinds of tongues needs to be used with the gift of interpretation.  However, even if so, this doesn’t mean every non believer will believe.  Many will still think you are mad just as they did on the day of Pentecost.

However the gift of prophecy being used is greater because it reveals the secrets of mens hearts and they falling down on their face report that God is in you of a truth.

1 Corinthians 14:39
39  Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
