Come let us Grow Together: Discouragement

Come let us Grow Together is a weekly series that deals with the many topical categories that exist within the Word of God. The purpose of this series is to grow in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in things pertaining to God.

Discouragement is not being Thankful for the Here & Now.

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1 Thess 5:18)

In the process of your giving of thanks you will find yourself entering into the praise and worship of God! This will relieve your discouragement. Choose to Worship & Praise God through your circumstances.

Discouragement is a Distrust for the Future.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Heb 11:6)

Discouragement is an Indifference for Opportunity.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matt 5:14-16)

Rebuke Discouragement!!

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. (1 Tim 6:6-8)

Discouragement is an Insecurity for Tomorrow.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Prov 3:5-6)

Find Hope!!
Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life. (Prov 13:12)

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. (Psa 42:11)

Discouragement is an impatience with time. Have patience with God’s time.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: (Eccl 3:1)

Be full of faith!! Faith says I can!! Remember this too will pass!!

Come let us Grow Together: Thoughts, Attitudes, & Behavior

Come let us Grow Together is a weekly series that deals with the many topical categories that exist within the Word of God. The purpose of this series is to grow in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in things pertaining to God.

Your thoughts create attitudes which corresponds to your behavior. It is important to realize that as Christians each one of us must mold our Thoughts, Attitudes, and Behavior to that of which the Word of God teaches us. In so doing, each one of us will begin to talk the same talk and to walk the same walk. This is because we are of the same mind, because we have molded our thoughts to what thus saith the Word of God!

(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; (2 Cor 10:4-5)

Did you hear it? Are weapons are mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds. You must guard your thoughts!! What are you telling yourself? What are you allowing your mind to ponder upon? What manner of spirit are you of?

But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. (Lk 9:55)

Not only must you guard your thoughts, but you also must guard your attitude and your behavior! Are you of a positive attitude or a negative attitude?

We can learn a lot by looking at the report of the 12 spies sent out by Moses to give a report of the promised land. We see 2 different reports and we see 2 different spirits!!

The first report was negative…

And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan. (Num 13:26-29)

And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. (Num 13:30-33) This resulted by their thoughts which were produced by a doubtful spirit. This spirit spread to the entire congregation!! The spirit of doubt!!

And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt? And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt. (Num 14:1-4)

This doubtful spirit which was produced by their evil report of the land brought forth a negative attitude in which they spoke and questioned God. Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! Ultimately their corresponding behavior was to devise a plan to return in to Egypt!

However, Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh were of a different spirit!!

And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes: And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not. (Num 14:6-24)

Joshua and Caleb were of a positive spirit of faith!! They believed the Lord!! And they gave a different report in accordance to what they believed, which was produced by their thoughts. Their thoughts produced a positive attitude and their corresponding behavior was to take the land in which the Lord had promised to them!!

And the Lord said,

Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it. (Num 14:22-24)

It’s in your mind set. It’s in your belief system. Faith says I can!! Doubt says I can’t! It’s time that each one of us challenge our belief system!! Let us examine our thoughts and see if what we are telling ourselves is truth or a lie!! Is our thoughts of a doubtful spirit or are they of a faithful spirit?

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. (Pro 18:21) Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (Eph 4:29) Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. (Col 4:6)

He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. (1 Jn 2:6)

It’s all in your Thoughts, Attitudes, and Behavior!!

C&C: Stay Out of Potiphar’s House

Connections and Comparisons is an ongoing weekly series that deals with many scriptures in the Bible, some of which are not commonly addressed. The purpose of this series is to examine the scriptures at hand comparing what is said and looking at the connections within.

The story of Potiphar’s house is very important! It begins with some of the twelve sons of Jacob whose name had been changed to Israel. These twelve sons of Israel are also known as the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph was one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Genesis 37:3-4
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.
4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

It came to pass that Israel sent Joseph to his brethren where they feed their flocks to see if it was well with them, his flocks, and to come back and bring him word again. However, as the children of Israel seen him coming they conspired against him to slay him. However, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, Reuben, heard of It and he delivered him out of their hands with the intention that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again. In the meantime a company of Ishmeelites with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, were on there way to carry it down to Egypt and Judah, one of the sons of Israel said to his brethren, “What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.” (Gen 37:26-28) “And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, and captain of the guard.” (Gen 37:36)

Genesis 39:1-9
1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
6 And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
8 But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House and Stay away from Potiphar’s Wife!!

Genesis 39:10-12
10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House and Stay away from Potiphar’s Wife!! You do have a choice!! You can say NO!! Even if there are consequences for saying NO!!

Two of the commandments given by God under the Law was:

Exodus 20:14
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Exodus 20:17
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

The penalty for laying with another man’s wife under the Law was death!!

Leviticus 20:10
10 And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House!!

Proverbs 5:1-13
1 My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.
3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:
4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword.

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House!!

5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.
6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.
7 Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.
8 Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:
9 Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:
10 Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;
11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,
12 And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;
13 And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House!!

Proverbs 5:15-20
15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.
17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.
18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.
20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House!!

Proverbs 6:20-35
20 My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
25 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House!!

27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House!!

Proverbs 7:1-27
1 My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
2 Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
3 Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.
4 Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:
5 That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
6 For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,
7 And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
8 Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House!!

9 In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
10 And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.
16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.
19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
20 He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House!!

21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;
23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House!!

24 Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
25 Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.
26 For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
27 Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

Matthew 5:27-32
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Stay Out of Potiphar’s House!!

1 Corinthians 6:15-20
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Hell, Sheol, Gehenna, and the like…

Job 26:6
6 Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.

The Hebrew word translated into English as hell, grave, and the pit in the Old Testament is Sheol meaning:

or she’ol, sheh-ole’; from <H7592> (sha’al); hades or the world of the dead (as if a subterranean retreat), including its accessories and inmates :- grave, hell, pit. —Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary

In the New Testament we see the English word hell being translated from the Greek words Hades and Tartarus as well as the Hebrew word Gehenna. Let’s look at an example of each one of these.

Luke 16:22-23
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

The Greek word used to translate hell is Hades:

from <G1> (a) (as a negative particle) and <G1492> (eido); properly unseen, i.e. “Hades” or the place (state) of departed souls :- grave, hell. —Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary

Matthew 10:28
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

The Hebrew word used to translate hell is Gehenna:

of Hebrew origin [<H1516> (gay’) and <H2011> (Hinnom)]; valley of (the son of) Hinnom; gehenna (or Ge-Hinnom), a valley of Jerusalem, used (figurative) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment :- hell. —Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary

2 Peter 2:4
4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

The Greek word used to translate hell is Tartarus:

from Tartaros (the deepest abyss of Hades); to incarcerate in eternal torment :- cast down to hell. —Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary

Tartarus is the deepest abyss of Hades? Are there different levels or punishments in hell? Which Greek word for our English word hell, is the equivalent of the Hebrew word Sheol that was translated for our English word hell in the Old Testament?

Remember according to the Prophet Isaiah doctrinal knowledge and understanding comes “precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little”. (Isaiah 28:10) And according to the Apostle Paul “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16) We are also told by the Apostle Paul “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

Let’s first answer the question of which Greek word for our English word hell, is the equivalent of the Hebrew word Sheol that was translated for our English word hell in the Old Testament?

Acts 2:25-27
25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

The Greek word being used for hell here is Hades of which then is the equivalent of the Hebrew word Sheol.

Psalms 16:8-10
8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

So what about Tartarus being the deepest abyss of Hades? Are there different levels or punishments in hell?

Deuteronomy 32:21-22
21 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.
22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

Psalms 86:13
13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.

Luke 12:45-48
45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
47 And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

So Tartarus is the deepest abyss of Hades or Sheol.

2 Peter 2:4
4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

In the parallel passage of scripture referring to these angels that were caste down to hell it reads, “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.” (Jude 1:6)

Here we learn that this place of Tartarus being the deepest abyss of Hades or Sheol is also a place of outer darkness of which scriptures agree.

Matthew 25:29-30
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 22:11-14
11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

We also learn in the book of Revelation of a place referred to as the bottomless pit.

The Greek word in use for pit means:

of uncertain derivative; a hole in the ground (dug for obtaining or holding water or other purposes), i.e. a cistern or well; figurative an abyss (as a prison) :- well, pit. —Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary

This place of abyss or the bottomless pit is where Satan is to be bound for a thousand years. Is this bottomless pit also the same place as Hades, Sheol, and Tartarus?

Revelation 20:1-3
1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Isaiah 14:9-15
9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
10 All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?
11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

So we learn that the abyss or that of the pit is also the same place as that of Tartarus, which is the deepest abyss of Hades or Sheol.

So what about Gehenna and that of the Lake of Fire?

Just as Tartarus is the deepest abyss of Hades or Sheol of which Satan is to be bound for a thousands years in, Gehenna is a type of the Lake of Fire of which Sheol or Hades will be cast into.

Revelation 20:7-15
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:7-8
7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

How do we know Gehenna is a type of the Lake of Fire?

Gehenna is the Hebrew word that was also translated as hell in the New Testament. Gehenna is
of Hebrew origin [<H1516> (gay’) and <H2011> (Hinnom)]; valley of (the son of) Hinnom; gehenna (or Ge-Hinnom), a valley of Jerusalem, used (figurative) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment :- hell. —Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary

In the Old Testament we learn that the valley of the son of Hinnom was the place where:

2 Chronilces 28:1-4
1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord, like David his father:
2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim.
3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.
4 He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

2 Chronicles 33:1-6
1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem:
2 But did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, like unto the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.
3 For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.
4 Also he built altars in the house of the Lord, whereof the Lord had said, In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever.
5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord.
6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.

Tophet is a place within Gehenna or the valley of the son of Hinnom.

Jeremiah 7:29-33
29 Cut off thine hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on high places; for the Lord hath rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.
30 For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the Lord: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it.
31 And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.
32 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that it shall no more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place.
33 And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them away.

Jeremiah 32:31-35
31 For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,
32 Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
33 And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.
34 But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it.
35 And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

This same valley of the son of Hinnom or Gehenna Jesus makes several references to when speaking of the Lake of Fire.

Remember the Hebrew word used to translate our English word Hell, in some of the cases, was the word Gehenna of which Jesus referred to.

of Hebrew origin [<H1516> (gay’) and <H2011> (Hinnom)]; valley of (the son of) Hinnom; gehenna (or Ge-Hinnom), a valley of Jerusalem, used (figurative) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment :- hell. —Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary

Mark 9:42-49
42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
49 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

Matthew 10:28
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

The Prophet Isaiah speaks of Tophet of which we learned was in the valley of the son of Hinnom saying,

Isaiah 30:33
33 For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.

Isaiah 66:23-24
23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.
24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

Theses verses from Isaiah align up with what Jesus spoke of in Mark chapter 9:42-49 and Matthew chapter 10:28 above and thus we know that Gehenna is then a type of the Lake of Fire.

Isaiah 34:8-10
8 For it is the day of the LORD’S vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion.
9 And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch.
10 It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.

Revelation 14:9-11
9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Revelation 20:10
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Come let us Grow Together: Praise the Beauty of Holiness

Come let us Grow Together is a weekly series that deals with the many topical categories that exist within the Word of God. The purpose of this series is to grow in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in things pertaining to God.

And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. (2 Chron 20:21-22)

Holiness is an essential trait that we as Christians need to develop and live by. Not only do we need to develop and live by this trait, we need to Praise the Beauty of Holiness! For our Lord is Holy!! And without being Holy we will not see God!!

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: (Heb 12:14)

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. (1 Peter 1:15-16)

God instructed the children of Israel to Praise the Beauty of Holiness!! They did this by sending up praises to God and singing songs to Him!! “And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.”

We also see that the Lord instructed us to be Holy even as He is Holy!! We were told that this included our conversation and the Greek word behind conversation here means behavior!! So we are to be holy in all manner of behavior!! We also received instruction that if you do not follow after peace and holiness, you will not see God!!

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Rm 12:1-2)

We have received further instructions of the Lord, that following after Holiness also involves your body!! We are to present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God!! How do we do this? Verse 2 gave us the answer. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Do not be conformed to the world, and to do this we need to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. We must think differently!! We must behave differently!! We must present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God!! WHICH IS YOUR REASONABLE SERVICE!!

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. (1 Jn 2:16-17)

Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thess 5:22-23)

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. (2 Cor 6:17-18)

C&C: A Pillar in the Household of God

Connections and Comparisons is an ongoing weekly series that deals with many scriptures in the Bible, some of which are not commonly addressed. The purpose of this series is to examine the scriptures at hand comparing what is said and looking at the connections within.

Revelation 3:11-13
11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

1 Timothy 3:14-16
14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Pillar: from stuo (to stiffen; properly akin to the base of <G2476> (histemi)); a post (“style”), i.e. (figurative) support :- pillar. —Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary

1 Corinthians 3:5-15
5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?
6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.
10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Ephesians 2:18-22
18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

A Pillar in the Household of God must “know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” This “pillar and ground of the truth” must understand “ye are God’s building” “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” “and another buildeth thereon.” “But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.” We “are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”

What is this “pillar and ground of the truth”? “Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” (1 Cor 2:2) We “are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone”. Jesus praying says, “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word”. (Jn 17:20) Jesus Christ was both a Prophet and an Apostle.

Acts 3:20-26
20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.
23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.

Hebrews 3:1-15
1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
4 For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

This “pillar and ground of the truth” is the gospel of Jesus Christ and we are warned “But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

1 Corinthians 3:9-15
9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.
10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

This “pillar and ground of the truth” is understanding the gospel of Jesus Christ and how we are to partake of this gospel of Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

This “pillar and ground of the truth” is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ who died for our sins “according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

To partake of this “pillar and ground of the truth” one must be born again of water and of the Spirit as Jesus instructed Nicodemus.

John 3:1-8
1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

To partake of this “pillar and ground of the truth” as the Apostle Paul instructs his son in the gospel Timothy we must also understand who God is.

1 Timothy 3:15-16
15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

This same mystery is also known as the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ.

Colossians 2:1-4
1 For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.

It is of the utmost importance to understand this “mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ” which we are told is “God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”

Before Jesus Christ’s ascension he made sure that his Apostles understood this mystery since the gospel was going to be believed on through their words “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word” (Jn 17:20) and the fact that the gospel is “built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone”. (Eph 2:20)

Jesus revealed to them that “I and my Father are one” (Jn 10:30) and that the Holy Spirit was also himself in the Spirit which would not leave them comfortless saying, ” I will come to you.”

John 14:17-18
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

Jesus verified this.

John 16:29-31
29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

Let us now look at what the Apostle John also wrote in first John chapter one.

1 John 1:1
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

Stop. The time reference of creation is spoken of. Notice very carefully however that after speaking of seeing and touching that which was from the beginning, the Apostle John explicitly says that he was “of the Word of life”. This is a very big point. He did not say that he was the Word of life, but rather he was “of the Word of life” Who was the Word according to John chapter one verse one? Do you remember? Answer: “the Word was God”.

So the reason why the Apostle John did not say that Jesus was the Word of life is because the Word was not made flesh before creation began. So in regards to the humanity of Christ, he was “of the Word of life”. Jesus was fully man and fully God. So the flesh of God is “of the Word of life” whereas the divinity of Christ was the Word of life. Not sure? Let us look at verse two of first John chapter one, as well as verse four chapter one of the gospel of John, of which was also speaking of the Word of God, as well as first John chapter five verse twenty.

1 John 1:2
2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

So just like the Apostle said in the gospel of John chapter one verse one, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”. We also now see that of which was with God was eternal life and that eternal life was manifested unto us. Thus why the Apostle John said that he was “of the Word of life”.

John 1:4
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Remember this verse of scripture was speaking of the Word that “was with God, and the Word was God”. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

However when speaking of the divinity of Christ the Apostle John tells us that Jesus Christ “is the true God, and eternal life.”

1 John 5:20
20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

So let us now re-examine the first three verses of first John chapter one.

1 John 1:1-3
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Notice carefully that verse three does not mention the Holy Ghost. Why would the Apostle John leave out the third person of the Trinity as part of the fellowship of the believers if there was a Trinity? The answer: there isn’t a Trinity. This was a development over time of philosophers of men who could not discern the Word of God.

2 Corinthians 5:19
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Who was in Christ? God was.

Matthew 1:23
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Who was with us? God was.

Galattians 4:4
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

When was the Word made flesh? “When the fulness of the time was come”.

John 1:14
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Who was the Word? “The Word was God”. Who was in Christ? God was. Who was with us? God was.

John 3:34
34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

Who is the Spirit? “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24)

Colossians 2:8-10
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

The fullness of the Godhead which is the Spirit (for God is a Spirit and God gave his Spirit to Jesus without measure because Jesus was God with us and yet fully man at the same time) and thus you have the fullness of the Godhead dwelling in the body of Christ; not a plurality of persons of God dwelling in the body of Christ. “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power”.

This is why the Apostle John said “truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” (1 John 1:3)

This is also what Jesus meant when he according to his humanity prayed to the eternal Spirit of God that we “all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us”. (John 17:21)

John 17:20-21 Brackets inserted by me
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me {God is a Spirit}, and I in thee {Jesus was fully man and fully God}, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

How are Jesus and the Father one? They are one in body and one in Spirit as well as one in name and one in truth!

Jesus is God and Jesus is one with God in truth, in name, in body, and in Spirit. We become one in Jesus by the truth when we receive the Holy Ghost or the Spirit of Truth. This Spirit of Truth, the Holy Ghost, gives us access to the body of Christ of which we become “members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.” (Ephesians 5:30) “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:13)

Ephesians 4:4-6
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

This is “the pillar and ground of the truth” of which A Pillar in the Household of God must understand. “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” (1 Jn 5:20)

Just prior to Jesus’ ascension into Heaven, he opened the scriptures concerning himself to his disciples and revealed to them what to preach, “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”

Luke 24:44-49
44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

The Apostles having all knowledge now of the scriptures concerning Jesus the Christ and knowing who Jesus the Christ really is waited in Jerusalem for the promise of the Holy Ghost which they knew was going to be Jesus in them as he told them “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” (Jn 14:18) “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:” (Col 1:27) “Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” (Rm 8:9) “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” (Gal 4:4-7)

Thus when the Holy Ghost was poured out upon the believers as promised by Jesus, the Apostles having the complete understanding of who Jesus the Christ really is, told all men what they must do in order to be born again of water and of the Spirit to have eternal life.

Acts 2:36-41
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

The Apostle Matthew being with the Apostle Peter who spoke this truth of how every one of us must be born again or we will not enter into the kingdom of God, also fully understood who Jesus is and did not have any objections of what the Apostle Peter taught as they all understood who Jesus is.

A Pillar in the Household of God must also “know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” (1 Tim 3:15)

Hebrews 12:14
14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Galatians 5:16-25
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Romans 12:1-2
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

1 Thessalonians 4:2-8
2 For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.
3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
16 Rejoice evermore.
17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19 Quench not the Spirit.
20 Despise not prophesyings.
21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

Glean Your Field One More Time!

Matthew 9:37-38
37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Glean Your Field One More Time!

Definition of glean: to gather grain left behind by reapers; to collect bit by bit- one piece of grain at a time.

We say Lord send me into your harvest, I am willing to go. The church says send us into the harvest field Lord. But are you willing to glean the fields? Are you willing to get your hands dirty? Are you willing to reach out day by day and bit by bit to gather together the remnant of the harvest fields that the reapers have already worked? Are you willing to get down on your knees in prayer to water the harvest field in search of just one more bit of wheat? Just one more soul of man?

Are you willing to glean your home field one more time? Are you willing to glean what the Church has already reaped, already harvested, and diligently search for the precious grain, to search for the priceless souls of the unsaved humanity?

What is the soul of man worth to you!

Are you willing to die for one lost soul of man? Are you willing to fall down on your face before the Lord and weep for the precious grain yet to be harvested? Will you to also look the other way as did the priest and Levite when they saw the one wounded and dying on the street? Or will you be as the doctor of the good news and get down on the ground and speak life into the dead bones of men? Will you speak unto them and say O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord and live! Ye bones of dead men rise up and walk! Ye bones of dead men rise up in repentance and be water baptized in Jesus name for the remission of your sins!! Ye bones of dead men rise up and become a new creature in Christ Jesus!! Ye bones of dead men rise up in repentance and receive ye the Holy Ghost!! I say unto you dead bones of men live!! Yea, I say unto you dead bones of men live!! I speak unto you dead bones of men the Word of Life!! Hear ye the good news of Jesus Christ and live!!

Preach and teach the good news!

“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. (Romans 5:6-19)

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” (Isaiah 53:5-12)

Understandest thou what thou readest?

“Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.” (Acts 8:29-39)

He commanded the chariot to stand still and they both went down into the water and Philip baptized the Eunuch in the only saving name of the Lord Jesus!! “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” (Acts 22:16)

Church and fellow saint of God? Are you ready to glean your fields one more time? Are you like as Ruth and ready to get down on your knees in prayers and begin gleaning your towns, cities, and suburbs again!! Are you ready to reach your city, your county, your country, and your world? “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” (Titus 2:13-14) There is no greater work you can do for the Lord but to labour in the harvest fields for the souls of men!!!

Are you a gleaner!! Are you searching for the precious wheat? Are you laboring and toiling with your hands searching the land piece by piece and bit by bit!!

We all know the story of Naomi, how that in Bethelehem-judah there was a famine in the land and Naomi’s husband took her and their two sons and went into the country of Moab and dwelt there. And in time Naomi’s husband died, and her two sons took them wives of Moab. The one wife was named Orpah and the other Ruth.

And as time passed Naomi’s two sons also died and left no children. Then Naomi heard that the Lord had visited his people Israel in giving them bread. Therefore Noami desired to return to Bethlehem-Judah and told her two daughter-in-laws to each return to her mothers house. Orpah eventually did return to her people. But Ruth clave unto Naomi and returned to Israel with her.

“And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her. So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi? And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the Lord hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the Lord hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me? So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.” (Ruth 1:16-22)

Ruth’s great proclamation! “Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.”

Are you a Ruth!! Are you a gleaner of the fields!! Are you ready to go find the lost souls of men!! Are you ready to glean your field one more time!! Ruth was a gleaner!!!

And Ruth came and gleaned in the field after the reapers. Ruth was the one to get down in the dirt to gather just a few handfuls of grain after a long day in the field under the hot sun to provide bread for her and her mother-in-law, Naomi. Are you willing to work the heat of the day in the Lord’s harvest field and glean the lost souls of men bit by bit and piece by piece!! Are you willing to glean your field one more time!!

“And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field. So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law.” (Ruth 2:22-23)

Gleaning is hard back breaking work!! Most people will not glean!! Gleaning requires patience, diligence, and a heart for lost souls!!

It’s time to first break up your fallow ground!

Hosea 10:12-13
12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.
13 Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.

But now it’s time to trust in God and gather together the precious souls of men grain by grain and piece by piece!

God rewarded Ruth for her devotion to her mother-in-law Naomi by giving her favor in the site of Boaz who owned the field where she gleaned and Boaz took Ruth for his wife, and God will reward his wife the Church for our labouring and gleaning of the harvest fields!!

Church are we willing to go back into the harvested fields of our town, our city, and surrounding areas and glean the few precious souls that were missed and overlooked? Are we willing to use technological advances of our modern world to reach out to the world through the internet!! Are we willing to glean the outcasts, the down and out, those the other denominal churches spurn!! The poor of our city!! Those filthy with the sins of this world!! Those battling drug and alcohol addictions!!

“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” (Jude 20-23)

These souls are already on there way to hell!! Their clothes have caught on fire from the flames of hell!! And their flesh is starting to burn!!

Are these twice dead, plucked up by the roots? How do you know if you will not glean your field once again!! Do not be as the self righteous!! To good to help the man in the ditch!!

Let us not be the Pharisee who went up into the temple and begin saying, I thank God I am not like this publican, and God have to humble us because of our pride. These are they of whom are
not willing to get their hands dirty to save a precious soul!!

All Souls are precious to Jesus!! And Jesus died for us all!!

Jesus is saying, Church go out to your friends, your neighbors, your city, witness, testify, give home bible studies, compel them come in, to save themselves, from the Holy Wrath of God which is soon to come when God will pour out his wrath upon the ungodly, the wicked, the unbeliever!!

The Good Shepherd will leave the ninety-nine sheep and seek for the one lost sheep! And upon recovering the one lost sheep he will rejoice with all!! Jesus died for that one lost soul!! If we desire to win souls, it will take gleaning the field again!! It will take effort, it will take prayer, it will take patience, and it will take work!!

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Church, let’s glean our fields one more time!! Church, let’s follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ and be a gleaner of the souls of men!!
